A Rock at the Docks

The Canadian Music Week rocked downtown Toronto’s venues with some of our own home-bred talent. Nightclubs, lounges and concert halls showcased over 500 local and national artists that shook the ground and lifted some skirts. Opening the week was the Indies Awards, which was held at The Docks on March 1st 2006 (click here for photo coverage of this event)

Media and fans gathered to watch the awards given to the next up and coming indie/rock group of the year. Artists such as Barenaked Ladies and Bif Naked have been past recipients of the Indies.

This year, the week of rock and roll (and even some urban talent) filled some of our greatest venues throughout the city. Venues such as the Drake Hotel, Republik and the Fairmont Royal York changed their regular dj’s and dress shoes with ripped jeans and heavy guitar playing.

Default, of Vancouver’s upbringing, played an amazing number at the Opera House - A continuously smooth performance that put the audience in a daze.

At Fez Batik, we joined Carl Henry, who sang "Homie’s Girl" live and a remix of Bare as She Dare. He closed the night with his latest single "I wish" and headed to the after party at Touch Lounge where we got some 411 on his next video shoot (to be shot at C Lounge) and his appearances in Europe next week. The burlesque show with former Pussycat doll Rachel Sterling, was an event not to be missed. Feathers were flying, legs were spreading, and water was the envy of all men when Rachel took an intimate bath in the middle of Crystal Lounge. (click here for photo coverage of this event)

The Phoenix had a full night hosting a great performance by the Philosopher Kings and bringing other celebrities such as Kid Rock to the full venue.

To close the week, performances at the Docks and The Fairmont Royal York housed artists such as Bedouin Soundclash (winning this year’s favorite single), Melanie Durrant, and Raekwon (of WuTang Clan). Look out for Indies favorite international album won by Bloc Party and a big congratulation to The Arcade Fire who took two Indies awards this year.(click here for photo coverage of this event)
