TOPTOP 10 FASHION TRENDS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2008

1) THE COLOUR YELLOW
Mellow or bright, the sunshine colour hits it big this season.
Everywhere you look, you’re going to see yellow garb. So brighten up your wardrobe with a few pieces in this must-have hue. Yellow’s complimentary colour, purple, is taking a close second. From dark violet to hot plum, purple is another sure-fire winner.

2) WIDE-LEG PANTS
Most likely a reaction against the skinny shape of past seasons, the wide-leg pant is taking over. A nice break for those of us who don’t have perfect bodies, this pant is super-flattering. Pair it with heels for maximum impact. Quick tip: Make sure they fit nicely in the bum. Sagging is never sexy.

3) OVERSIZED SUNGLASSES
The bigger, the better when it comes to your shades this summer. If you have a round face, get the squarish ones. If your face is more angular, the rounder ones are for you. Try to go for a Hepburn-esque feel. You want to look like a movie star, not a bug.

4) BIG, BOLD JEWELRY
When it comes to accessories this season, choose a few that make a statement. The important thing is that you don’t want your accessories to compete with each other. Pick one or two pieces that seriously satisfy your yen for bling.

5) VINTAGE FLORAL DRESSES
These soft, romantic frocks are easy to wear on their own or to layer.
For those of you who think that 80’s is vintage, dial it back at least another 10 years. We’re talking 70’s or before. If it looks so old that you can practically see through it, you’ve hit the mark.

6) ART DECO INSPIRED FASHION
1930’s and 40’s glamour is back with a vengeance. The elegance and sophistication of this era is big with celebrities and can be seen on the hottest runways (i.e. Marc Jacobs). Look for flowing silk and satin and architectural inspired designs.

7) SAFARI
Clean and sharp, the safari trend always looks fresh. Anything in crisp, tailored linens and white or khaki colours are great. Shirt dresses and jumpsuits demand authority this season. Nothing says high fashion like looking like you’re about to go lionhunting.

8) VOLUMINOUS SKIRTS
Just like in the pant world, slim takes a back seat when it comes to skirts. There are certain times when you just can’t be afraid to go big. Relocate your slim skirts to the back of your closet to save for another season, because this isn’t it. Show you’ve got your finger on the pulse and rock out a skirt with volume.

9) BIRD MOTIF
Birds have always held their own when it comes to decking out our gear, but this is their real season to soar. When you’re shopping keep your eyes out for our feathered friends and you’ll be flying high in style.

10) FADED, DISTRESSED DENIM
I reluctantly add this trend to the list because I have yet to come around to liking it myself. In my opinion, light denim is ugly and unflattering. But I’m not here to judge; I’m here to report the trends and the fact of the matter is faded denim is back. If you want to wear it, that’s your perogative.
